Donald Trump’s pardon for Conrad Black shows he didn’t forget his old friend

Four years ago, Conrad Black wrote a glowing piece on Donald Trump, who was vying at the time to become the Republican presidential nominee. 

Describing him as "an old friend", Lord Black said the businessman was not only "a fine and generous and loyal man", but that he had "shaken the American political system ‘by the eyeteeth’, and it will be better for it".

Mr Trump, who had already been the subject of fierce criticism from some sections of the media, responded by lauding Lord Black as "one of the truly great intellects and my friend", adding: "I won’t forget."

On Wednesday, the US president showed that he had indeed not forgotten as he pardoned the 74-year-old former media mogul.
